Osvaldo Hurtado

President of Ecuador

In 1977, Mr. Hurtado headed the Commission in charge of drafting the Laws on Referendums, Elections and Parties which made up the legal framework that guided the democratic transition in Ecuador in 1979. Mr. Hurtado served as Vice President of Ecuador (1979-1981), President of the Republic (1981-1984) and President of the National Constituent Assembly (1997-1998) that approved the new Constitution. He is currently the President of CORDES, a non-profit organization based in Quito studying economic, social and political problems of Ecuador.
