Kofi Annan´s life was one of service to all humanity. As the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, he was a relentless champion for human rights, development and the rule of law. The Members of the World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid (WLA - CdM) deeply mourn the loss of a global statesman, a constant advocate for peace and our highly respected Member Kofi Annan, with whom many of us had the privilege to work during our time in office and in the years since.
In 2001, Annan and the United Nations were awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, for their work for a better-organized and more peaceful world, and the creation of initiatives such as the Millennium Development Goals and the UN Global Compact. The Nobel Peace Laureate played a central role in the adoption of the UN’s first-ever counter-terrorism strategy at the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security organized by WLA - CdM in 2005, and called on Member States to adopt a common approach to fighting terrorism worldwide speaking to an international audience in Madrid.
Even in retirement, Annan remained staunchly committed to making the world more developed, inclusive and sustainable for present and future generations, giving a voice to young people so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow. He fostered improved global governance and strengthened the capacities of people everywhere to strive for a fairer world. In the words of António Guterres, current UN Secretary-General and a Member of WLA - CdM, "Kofi Annan was a global champion for peace and all humanity and a guiding force for good.” He inspired millions and made us all stronger in the pursuit of our common humanity. We join all of those worldwide expressing our gratitude to him and our heartfelt condolences to his family.
