The World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid celebrates International Women’s Day 2019

On the occasion of 8 March, see a video featuring the views of our Members on gender equality and the empowerment of women

Almost all female Members of the World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid were the first females elected Heads of State or Heads of Government in their countries. Among its Membership, the World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid also has the first directly democratically elected female president (Bigdís Finnbogadottír, former President of Iceland) and the first openly gay Prime Minister (Johana Sigurdardóttir, former Prime Minister of Iceland).

In the past year, Members of the WLA - Club de Madrid have also led missions to further the rights of women in the framework of the INSPRED+ Project. Former President of the Government of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, led a mission to Cape Verde in February 2018 to facilitate the inclusion of domestic workers in the formal economy and former President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, lead a mission in November 2018 to advocate for the implementation of a law to prevent gender violence in Paraguay. You can read accounts of these missions below:
