With the removal of internal borders within the Schengen area, in an era of unauthorised migration into Europe, EU Member State national governments are under increased pressure from their electorates to reduce illegal immigration. Consequently, we are witnessing an intensified collaboration between European governments on the management of their external borders.

In the latest publication to come out of the Migration Policy Institute, their experts discuss the detected and estimated scope of irregular migration in the European Union and offer up a menu of policy options and actions governments can take to build a “whole-of-system” approach to controlling illegal immigration while also creating the political space necessary for reforms of their immigration systems.
