Member Pastrana leads Shared Societies Project mission to Guatemala City

Club de Madrid Member Andrés Pastrana, President of Colombia (1998-2002), led a Shared Societies Project / Council of Europe Intercultural Cities mission to Guatemala City. The delegation was hosted by Guatemala City Mayor Álvaro Arzú, also a Club de Madrid Member as President of Guatemala (1995-2000). During the mission the Delegation, which included Daniel de Torres, former Barcelona Immigration and Intercultural  Dialogue Commissioner representing the Council of Europe Intercultural Cities Project, focused on exploring how the local level could best contribute to the building of a Shared Society

The Dar es Salaam Statement

Shared Scoeites, Club de Madrid, Tanzania, Dar es SalaamA group of informed African leaders and citizens met on 19th and 20th November in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania under the auspices of the Club de Madrid and the UONGOZI Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development. It was co-chaired by Club de Madrid Members H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania, H.E. Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana and H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria.

PM Campbell addresses the role of media in inclusive societies in Kyrgyzstan

Kim Campbell; SSPClub de Madrid highly committed Member, Kim Campbell has led a four days high level misson to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan The former Prime Minister of Canada focussed on meeting government officials, Parliamentarians, CSOs, and EU to discuss the role of media in inclusive and shared societies and how could the change in the media law, that is currently being discussed in Kyrgyzstan, can help the country in the pursue for a more inclusive society for ethnic minority groups. The need to give them more voice in the political process has been another relevant point of the discussions.

Killelea "Unemployment undermines peace"

Killelea-Shared SocietiesIn an article published in Project Syndicate "The Peace-Prosperity Cycle", Steve Killelea, executive chairman of the Institute for Economics and Peace and Member of the Club de Madrid's President's Circle, highlights that "pervasive or rising unemployment undermines peace". Experts to discuss a set of proposals to empower women as agents of change

Club de Madrid SSPThe Club de Madrid will convene October 1st and 2nd, with the support of the Alan B. Slifka Foundation, a group of 20 international experts with the objective of designing a packet of proposals, policies and practical recommendations intended to promote the role of women as agents of social, political and economic change in divided societies. In this manner they can fight against the double discrimination that the women suffer in their communities. The sessions, which will take place in the O'Reilly Palace of Madrid, will be led by one Members of the Club de Madrid: Chandrika Kumaratunga, ex President of Sri Lanka from 1994-2005. Kumaratunga will share her experiences in government concerning the empowerment of women in cases of double discrimination.

In collaboration with the Division for Social Policy and Development (UNDESA), the Club de Madrid organized a side-event at the 2013 UN Commision for Social Development titled: "A Shared is an Enabling Society: Creating the Conditions for politicial and economic empowement".
