Sixth High-Level Mission towards peaceful democracy transition in Myanmar

CLub de Madrid, Myanmar, Gusenbauer, Thinley, International IDEAKjell Magne Bondevik, former Primer Minister of Norway, and Jigmi Yoser Thinley, former Prime Minister of Bhutan, led the Sixth High-Level Mission to Myanmar from 14-17 June 2016 jointly with the Oslo Center. The mission was undertaken within the "Hih Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies" Project, funded by The Charitable Foundation.

Club de Madrid tackles the role of the military in Myanmar´s democratic transition

CLub de Madrid, Myanmar, Gusenbauer, Thinley, International IDEARicardo Lagos, ex President of Chile and Club de Madrid Member, led the Fifth High-Level Mission to Myanmar from 19 to 22 January 2016 jointly organized with International IDEA. This visit sought to advance a peaceful military transfer of power to the newl elected leaders, foster national reconciliation and identify next steps in the peace process and was part of the “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project, funded by The Charitable Foundation.

This Myanmar edition of International IDEA’s book Democratic Transitions: Conversations with World Leaders has been published by the European Union, the Club de Madrid and International IDEA.

 Club de Madrid High Level Mission to Myanmar ahead of crucial elections

CLub de Madrid, Myanmar, Gusenbauer, Thinley, International IDEAAs the national election campaign started in Myanmar, the Club de Madrid co-organized two multi-stakeholder events with International-IDEA in Yangon: a Roundtable with Civil Society Organisations: Lessons Learned from Leaders and a Meeting with 23 electoral candidates running in the upcoming elections. Club de Madrid Members Alfred Gusenbauer, former Chancellor of Austria and, Jigme Thinley, former Prime Minister of Bhutan, leading this Third High-Level Mission to Myanmar within the “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project funded by The Charitable Foundation, also met six Ambassadors from EU and non EU countries, President U Thein Sein, Speaker of the Parliament Thura Shwe Mann and Chairman of the UEC, U Tin Aye.

Han Seung-soo and Boris Tadic lead a mission on Decentralisation and Economic Development for Peace in Myanmar

SSP, CLub de Madrid, Myanmar, Boris TadicThe Club de Madrid co-organized two multi-stakeholder events on inclusive economic development and decentralization for social inclusion jointly with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Myanmar based nongovernmental organization Ecodev/ALARM. The mission (26-30, May) was undertaken in the framework of the “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project funded by The Charitable Foundation.

Supporting Effective Dialogue towards Democratic Transition and Good Governance in Myanmar

Jigme Thinley, former Prime Minister of Bhutan, led the first High-Level Mission to Myanmar within the new “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project.

The main focus of the mission was to take part in the Myanmar Good Governance Forum a joint initiative of the Government of Myanmar and UNDP which took place on February 23-25, in Nay Pyi Taw. The Good Governance Forum focused on looking beyond the national reforms initiated, reflecting specifically on the progress on the decentralization process and local governance reform. As a highlight, the reports and results on the State of Local Governance was launched during the Forum. The attendees included both national actors (Union, State/ Regions and township level) and international actors from national/local government, administration, parliaments, academia and research, CSOs, private organizations and the UN system.

Club de Madrid, Myanmar, Global Peace IndexThe increasing interconnectedness of the global economy means that local actions and shocks can impact individuals, communities and businesses on an international scale. Just consider the widespread and lasting impacts of high youth unemployment in Europe, the Arab Spring, political turmoil in Thailand, Russia’s annexation of Crimea and continuing violence in Syria. Although these tend to confirm the old adage of change being the only certainty, there are clear benefits to being able to better anticipate such events with anticipation and greater understanding providing us with a means to protect against, and alleviate the impact of economic and social shocks.

Kok and Bondevik meet with President U Thein Sein of Myanmar

Club de Madrid President and former Prime Minister of The Netherlands Wim Kok, and former Prime Minister of Norway, Kjell Magne Bondevik are in Burma leading an institutional trust building mission:

They have met with Myanmar's President, U Thein Sein and with two key Ministers, U Soe Thein and U Aung Min. This High-level Mission to Myanmar is intended to build trust among Burmese authorities, opposition, civil society, ethnic groups and other relevant stakeholders in order to identify a potential long-term initiative to provide Burmese leadership accompaniment, counsel and support in facing the daunting challenges of democratic transition.

Kjell Magne Bondevik, Prime Minister of Norway (1997-2000, 2001-2005), President of The Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and member of the Club de Madrid, hold an official mission to Myanmar to meet with Myanmar authorities including President Thein Sein, with whom former Prime Minister Bondevik addressed several sensitive and important issues.
