Acting President of Nigeria, Yemi Obisanjo: “There is no question that we need to develop counter-narratives"

Following-up on the National Workshop on Alternative Narratives to Violent Extremism, organized in Abuja on May 23-24, the CdM conducted a High-Level Mission to Nigeria (July 17-18), led by Club de Madrid Members, President Cassam Uteem (Mauritius) and President Festus Mogae (Bostwana). Mogae y Uteem disctuen sobre extremismo violento con actores clave de Nigeria

Los miembros del Club de Madrid y ex presidentes de Isla Mauricio y Botswana respectivamente, lideran una misión de dos días a Nigeria en la que se han entrevistado con el presidente en funciones del país, Yemi Osinbajo. En el encuentro los ex presidentes presentaron al líder africano un informe con recomendaciones sobre cómo combatir el extremismo violento y que fueron elaboradas en un taller celebrado el la capital del país en mayo de este año.

El director de la Sustainable Development Solutions Network de las Naciones Unidas, Jeffrey Sachs, fue el invitado especial del evento conmemorativo de los diez años del proyecto Sociedades Inclusivas del Club de Madrid. Sachs ofreció ante 10 ex jefes de estado o de gobierno un discurso basado en la importancia de la Agenda 2030 y de la inclusión social

 

Cassam Uteem leads a SSP Mission to Nepal  to help in the democratic process

During his visit he will meet the President and PM of the country. A Shared Societies approach would be very relevant, and the Club de Madrid is delighted to support Nepal’s quest for institutionalizing democracy and development as part of its SSP in-country missions. Teresita “Ging” Deles, NetPluss member and expert on Peace and Negotiations and former presidential adviser in the Philippines will also participate in the mission.

El 15 de septiembre se celebra el Día Internacional de la Democracia, un momento importante para una organización como el Club de Madrid, cuya misión es impulsar la democracia y sus valores. Con motivo de esta efemérides nuestra Presidenta Vaira Vike-Freiberga, y nuestros dos Vice-Presidentes, Tuto Quiroga y Cassam Uteem han escrito este artículo titulado 'Does Democracy Need a reset?', en el que reflexionan sobre los retos presentes y futuros de la democracia global.

 

Promoting Democracy Promotes Peace

The Club de Madrid congratulates Tunisia, the National Dialogue Quarter, and also all Tunisian citizens, as the symbolic recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded today. The successful adoption of the new Tunisian Constitution, the peaceful elections and the country’s efforts to build an inclusive future through democracy, the rule of law and respect for human and civil rights through dialogue is a beacon of hope for the MENA region but also for the world as a whole. The Nobel Peace Prize is a well deserved recognition of it.

'Sharing the burden-Sharing the benefits', Club de Madrid call to the Addis Ababa Financing for Development Summit

The three co-chairs of the Club de Madrid's Shared Societies Project, Cassam Uteem (Mauritius), Chandrika Kumaratunga (Sri Lanka) and Valdis Brikavs have signed an open letter about the biggest challenge facing the Post 2015 Development Process: the issue of funding. Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve. 

Ten Club de Madrid leaders join the Global Education & Skills Forum

The President and the Vicepresidents of the Club de Madrid, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Jennifer Mary Shypley and Jorge Quiroga respectively, will lead a ten Members delegation to Dubai to join the education-focused GESF meeting that will be held in Dubai the 15th-16th of march.

The Co-Chairs of the Shared Societies Project and Club de Madrid Members: Valdis Birkavs, Prime Minister of Latvia (1993-1994), Chandrika Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka (1994-2005), Cassam Uteem, President of the Republic of Mauritius (1992-1997, 1997- 2002) signed a public Response from the Shared Societies Project to the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals Outcome Document.
