Environmental Sustainability and Shared Societies Working Group Holds Second Meeting

 The Club de Madrid´s Environmental Sustainability and Shared Societies Working Group held their second meeting April 18 and 19th in Madrid. The Working Group was formed to explore and advocate for a holistic approach to development that integrates social, economic and environmental dimensions to create sustainable development and a Shared Societies. The Shared Societies Project is a Club de Madrid global initiative that has identified the necessity of creating a truly inclusive and response society that meets the interests of all sectors.

Muere Patricio Aylwyn, icono de la democracia en Chile y Miembro fundador del Club de Madrid

La democracia, Chile y el Club de Madrid están de luto. Una de las figuras más importantes de la democracia latinoamericana del siglo XX, Patricio Aylwin, ha fallecido hoy en su casa de Santiago (Chile) a los 97 años de edad. Alywin fue el primer Presidente democrático tras la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet. Su liderazgo y su capacidad de hacer llegar a acuerdos a sectores distantes hicieron del él a un auténtico icono de la democracia en Chile.

 Founding President of Seychelles and CdM Member, James R Mancham, addresses emerging African leaders in Nairobi

Sir James R. Mancham, Founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, Club de Madrid Member, and President of the Global Peace Council of the Universal Peace Federation, will address leaders from across Africa on the Africa Venture, a leadership programme for exceptional emerging leaders from across  the continent. He will also be presented with the Africa Peace Award 2016 at the launch of the programme in Nairobi.

The Club de Madrid has been following with deep concern the reports of heavy fighting along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh which have resulted in a number of reported casualties, including civilians. Índice de Paz de México: la paz tuvo el menor avance registrado desde 2011

La paz en México mejoró 0.3% en el último año, sin embargo, la tasa de progreso anual, se estancó, de acuerdo con los resultados del Índice de Paz México (IPM) 2016, publicados hoy. El IPM, producido por el Instituto para la Economía y la Paz, ofrece una evaluación integral de la paz en México, que detalla el nivel de paz en cada uno de los 32 estados de la República, durante los últimos 13 años.

The President of the Club de Madrid and former President of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga analyzes the current refugee crisis and how it should be managed from a democratic perspective in a recent op-ed published for the Huffington Post World Edition. In the article sheadvocates for the use of a counter-narrative that presents refugees as an asset and an opportunity not as a burden.

The Shared Societies Project at the OECD Global Development Forum

The Shared Societies Project was invited to participate at the OECD 2016 Global Forum on Development “From commitment to actual implementation of the SDGs: Policies, data and financing” organized in Paris from 30 to 31 March. The round table addressed different approaches, assessing the impact of public policies on social cohesion and how to track it. 

Club de Madrid condemns the attacks in Brussels

The Club de Madrid, strongly condemns today´s terrorist attacks in Brussels, as well as Saturday´s Istanbul suicide attack, with profound sorrow and pain. In this new criminal act we stand with the victims, the people and the Authorities of Belgium, Turkey and other places that unfortunately are affected by barbaric insanity.

International Women's Day: the work towards a democracy that truly delivers

Women have come a long way and that's exactly what International Women's Day is all about. It all started in 1908, when 15.000 courageous women marched  through the streets of New York City. Their demands?: shorter work hours, better pay, and the right to vote. A lot of progress have been achieved but the fight is far from over. 

Club de Madrid member Lagumdžija visits Jordan to talk about extremism and the refugee crisis

Former Prime Minister of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Member of the Club de Madrid, Zlatko Lagumdžija, met on February 17th with Abdullah Ensour, Prime Minister of Jordan, to discuss the need of engaging youth as key actors in building resilience against violent extremism and the refugee crisis Jordan is facing.

 Members Türk and Jomaa lead a CdM panel at the World Bank Fragility, Conflict & Violence Forum

Club de Madrid Members Danilo Türk, President of Slovenia (2007-2012) and Mehdi Jomaa, Prime Minister of Tunisia (2014-2015), led the CdM High-level mission on 1-3 March to participate in the World Bank Fragility, Conflict and Violence Forum for 2016. The event, themed Take Action for Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, gathered over 100 World Bank partners and 600 participants to address collectively the World Bank’s challenging goals to end extreme poverty by 2030 and promote shared prosperity in a sustainable manner.
