El Club de Madrid lanza un proyecto sobre nuevas narrativas para prevenir el extremismo violento

La iniciativa cuenta con el apoyo de la Comisión Europea y será presentada el próximo 28 de septiembre en Bruselas con un evento público al que asistirán los miembros del Club de Madrid Jerzy Buzek, Zlatko Lagumdzija y Mehdi Jomaa, ex Primeros Ministros respectivamente de Polonia, Bosnia Herzegovina y Túnez así como el Coordinador de Lucha Antiterrorista de la UE, Gilles de Kerchove

Clinton y Lagumdzija vuelven a unir sus esfuerzos por una sociedad compartida

Zlatko Lagumdzija, ex Primer Ministro de Bosnia y Herzegovina y miembro del CdM estuvo presente en un panel dedicado a rendir tributo a la memoria de las víctimas de la masacre de Srebrenica. En él participaron el Primer Minsitro de Serbia, Alexandre Vucic y el alcalde de Srebrenica Camil Durakovic. También estuvo presente Advija Ibrahimovic, superviviente de una tragedia que nos recuerda la importancia de avanzar hacia sociedades que reconozcan y protejan a las minorías.

Democracy pioneer, António Mascarenhas Monteiro, passes away

Club de Madrid Member, António Manuel Mascarenhas Monteiro, has passed away, aged 72. He was  the first democratically elected President of Cape Verde in 1991 and was re-elected for a second time in 1996.He was one of the most respected figures in Africa and worldwide. Shall hs example inspire a next generation of democratic

El 15 de septiembre se celebra el Día Internacional de la Democracia, un momento importante para una organización como el Club de Madrid, cuya misión es impulsar la democracia y sus valores. Con motivo de esta efemérides nuestra Presidenta Vaira Vike-Freiberga, y nuestros dos Vice-Presidentes, Tuto Quiroga y Cassam Uteem han escrito este artículo titulado 'Does Democracy Need a reset?', en el que reflexionan sobre los retos presentes y futuros de la democracia global.

Ban Ki-Moon calls for a #GlobalConsensus in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, stressed the necessity of collective action to counter terrorism and violent extremism during a two-day meeting at UN Headquarters in New York. “Taking collective preventive action against terrorism, in the spirit of our United Nations Charter, is the only way to secure peace and prosperity for succeeding generations,” Mr. Ban added. 

Kim Campbell will chair a new Advisory Board for appointing the Supreme Court of Canada

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, announced earlier this week a new and transparent process for appointing the Supreme Court through an independent Advisory Board. Club de Madrid congratulates its Member and former Prime Minister of Canada, Kim Campbell, for her appoinment to head this new institution, a move forward in the direction of good democratic governance.

Laura Chinchilla at the ECOSOC: "We believe in societies that are not owned by one sector but belong to everyone"

Club de Madrid Member Laura Chinchilla participated as keynote speaker at the 2016 ECOSOC High-level Segment Thematic Dialogue ‘Sustainable infrastructure for all’ on Thursday, 21 July 2016. The former President of Costa Rica delivered a powerful speech in which she advocated for the Shared Societes concept, stating that We believe in societies that are not owned by any one sector of society but belong to everyone'.

Club de Madrid publishes the summary of the Next Generation Democracy Sub-Saharan Africa Roundtable.

Joaquim Chissano, Olusegun Obasanjo, Hamadi Jebali and Joyce Banda, Club de Madrid members and former Presidents and Prime Ministers of Mozambique, Nigeria, Tunisia and Malawi respectively, gathered in a two-day meeting to discuss existing good practices and transformative ideas to advance democracy in Africa, together with experts, civil society representatives, young leaders and other stakeholders from the region.
