Ramos-Horta, Club de Madrid Member and Peace Nobel Prize leads a dialogue about democracy

Next Monday, 30th of January, Club de Madrid Member, former President of East Timor and Nobel Peace Prize recipient José Manuel Ramos Horta will participate in Madrid in a dialogue co-organized by the Club de Madrid and Instituto de Empresa to share his views about Peace and Democracy, and discuss its main challenges. 

Cassam Uteem leads a SSP Mission to Nepal  to help in the democratic process

During his visit he will meet the President and PM of the country. A Shared Societies approach would be very relevant, and the Club de Madrid is delighted to support Nepal’s quest for institutionalizing democracy and development as part of its SSP in-country missions. Teresita “Ging” Deles, NetPluss member and expert on Peace and Negotiations and former presidential adviser in the Philippines will also participate in the mission.

European Consultation for the Shared Societies Strategic Appraisal

Club de Madrid Member Danilo Türk, former president of Slovenia, chaired the European Consultation .The Strategic Appraisal Process takes places now that The Shared Societies Project is completing its ten years.


Defender of liberty and champion of human rights, James R. Mancham, passes away

James R. Macham, founding President of the Republic of Seychelles and Club de Madrid Member since 2013, passed away peacefully on the 8th of January 2017. As Danny Faure, current President of Seychelles, has said, "President Sir James Mancham, was a true patriot, a veteran politician, and a committed advocate of national reconciliation".

Goodbye to Mario Soares, Portugal’s “father of democracy”

Leadership, honesty and solid democratic values are tremendously needed attributes in times of uncertainty such as these. And Mario Soares had them all. He is going to be enormously missed. Mario Soares, who has died at the age of 92, was a founding Member of the Club de Madrid and the crucial leader that shed light on the path to democracy that Portugal undertook in the seventies.

Dr Vaira Vike-Freiberga, re-elected President of the Club de Madrid

 The General Assembly of the Club of Madrid, the largest forum of former Presidents and former Prime Ministers devoted to promoting democracy around the world, has re-elected Vaira Vike-Freiberga as its President for the next three yearsShe was the first woman to reach the Presidency in her country and also the first to become President of the Club of Madrid.

Dr Chau Chak Wing, designated Chair of the Asia-Pacific Region WLA-CdM President's Circle

Kim Campbell on Migrants Day: "Researchers show migrants enrich societies"

Today the world celebrates Migration Day, an issue very close to our Member Kim Campbell's heart. She addresses it in this three and a half minutes video in which she underlines the need to welcome inmigrants into new societies, so as to allow them to get "educated indoors". "We need to work to make everyone feel comfortable" says the former Prime Minister of Canada.

Vaira Vike-Freiberga on Migrants Day: "I spent part of my childhood in refugee camps"

 The biography of the Club de Madrid President and former President of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, includes the experience of being forced to leave her country with a very short notice and just "an old doll that I was allowed to take with me". Her personal journey as a migrant, first in Morocco and then in Canada, makes her story woth of listening in this International Migrant Day.

Youth, women, communities & Shared Societies, elements for a new narrative to prevent violent extremism

Empowering women and youth, advancing Shared Societies and engaging with religious leaders and former violent extremists are key elements for a new turn on preventing violent extremism. These are the main conclusions of the report that summarazies the kick-off meeting of the project ‘Preventing Violent Extremism: Leaders Telling a Different Story’. 

Club de Madrid supports the #InspiringTunisia campaign for a democracy that delivers

Thirteen Club de Madrid Members, all of them democractically elected former Presidents and Prime Ministers from all over the world, have signed the manifesto "Inspiring Tunisia; Translating Words Into Actions" to endorse a positive narrative about the country, and help the Tunisia2020 conference succeed.
