The Club of Madrid and the OECD focus on Cities and Green Growth

The 2010 Urban Roundtable, a joint activity between the Club of Madrid, th OECD and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, celebrated on May 25, 2010 at the OECD Headquarters, allowed major stakeholders to debate and discuss current best practices and identify knowledge gaps in urban green growth strategies being organised.

The Club of Madrid and the OECD to analyse  the Political Dimensions of the Crisis in the BRICS

OECD Headquarters in Paris will be the setting for this initiative, to be held on 26 May 2010. The roundtable will bring together Former Presidents and Prime Ministers, policy makers and scholars on the so-called BRICS Countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). This activity is part of the work being carried out by the Club of Madrid on the Political Dimensions of the World Economic Crisis, which has included four regional Roundtables on the European, Latin American, the Arab World and African perspectives.

The Club of Madrid, at the UN Alliance of Civilizations' III Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro

The organization, following the engagement with the Alliance, has organized a thematic session on Employment and Poverty Reduction in Times of Crisis. Leadership Action for Shared Societies: Bridging Cultures, Parity of Esteem and Economic Well-being as part of the Alliance's Third Forum in Rio de Janeiro. The sesson will feature Members John Kufuor (Ghana), Kjell Magne Bondevik (Norway), and the Ombudswoman of Peru Dr. Merino amongst others.

In a meeting with Haitian Prime Minister Bellerive a Club of Madrid delegation led by Members Patterson and Jospin made available to the Haitian authorities the leadership experience of its members to support the refoundation of the State after the earthquake of January 12

The Former President of Chile, in Madrid to participate in the presentation of the World Bank  study 'What opportunities do our children have? Report on human opportunity in Latin America and the Caribbean 2010',  took this opportunity to have an informal meeting with both CdM Secretary General (the outgoing, Fernando Perpiñá and the new one, Carlos Westendorp) and Deputy Secretary General, Mª Elena Agüero.

Ambassador Carlos Westendorp, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, will be the new Secretary General of the Club of Madrid, effective from May on. His new position was ratified by the XXIV Board of Directors and Extraordinary General Assembly, celebrated by teleconference due to the complications after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

II European Roma Summit: Calling for Political Will for Roma Inclusion

The former Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Philip Dimitrov, addressed this forum (Córdoba, 8-9 April 2010) in a round table that examined the progress and challenges of European and national policies in addressing the Roma inclusion.

Panel on Climate Change Forum in Brussels

March 26-28 2010, Brussels, Belgium - Gro Harlem Brundtland, member of the Club of Madrid and Prime Minister of Norway from 1986-1989 and 1990-1996, advocated the recommendations of the initiative GLCA during the Panel on Climate Change Forum in Brussels. This important high-level forum brings together annually the most influential politicians, business people and intellectuals in North America and Europe.

Seminar "The Route to Mexico: Challenges and Opportunities for a Global Agreement"

Our Member Mary Robinson spoke at this meeting (Cancun, 20 Mar) to explore climate related opportunities and challenges for the Americas vis a vis upcoming COP 16 to be held in Mexico City at the end of 2010.
