Kim Byung-Kook, Advisor to the Club of Madrid, to head Korea Foundation

Kim Byung-Kook,  a political science professor at Korea University, has been nominated as the president of the Korea Foundation. He served as President Lee Myung-bak’s first senior presidential secretary for foreign affairs and security and is part of the Club of Madrid's  Advisory Committee.

Mikhail Gorbachev: "The creation of Club of Madrid was a good idea"

The Former President of the Soviet Union met Secretary General, Carlos Westendorp, and Deputy Secretary General, Mª Elena Agüero, during his visit to Madrid. Gorbachev, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, was one of the founders of the Club of Madrid.

The Club of Madrid took part at the World Summit on the Future of Haiti

The event was held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on 2 June, 2010.

Employment and Poverty Reduction in times of crisis

Following on its partnership with the Alliance of Civilizations, the Club de Madrid, in collaboration with the Oslo Centre for Peace and Human Rights, organized a thematic session on Employment and Poverty Reduction in times of crisis: leadership action for Shared Societies in the framework of the III Forum of the Alliance in Rio de Janeiro May 27-29.

The Club of Madrid and UNIFEM, united for Women's Leadership for Peace

The organization had an active role in the meeting Advancing Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Peace in the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict and Worldwide, celebrated in the Spanish Senate (Madrid) on the 1-2 June, 2010.

European Foundation Centre Annual General Assembly 2010 – Foundation Week

Our Member Vaira Vike-Freiberga participated in the European Foundation Centre (EFC) Annual General Assembly 2010, following special invitation from Gerry Salole, Executive Director of EFC, an international association of key European foundations with Secretariat based in Brussels.

Sudan’s First Multi-party Elections for 24 years: Where do we go from here?

The Club of Madrid, Isis-WICCE and Institute for Security Studies organized a Strategy Workshop to reflect on the performance of Sudan’s first multiparty elections since 1986 (April 11-13, 2010) and draw lessons for promoting good practice in electoral conflict management across a variety of census, campaign financing, media, security and campaigning issues. The 2-day high-level mission was led by our Member Valdis Birkavs (26-27 May, 2010).

The Club of Madrid and the OECD focus on Cities and Green Growth

The 2010 Urban Roundtable, a joint activity between the Club of Madrid, th OECD and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, celebrated on May 25, 2010 at the OECD Headquarters, allowed major stakeholders to debate and discuss current best practices and identify knowledge gaps in urban green growth strategies being organised.

The Club of Madrid and the OECD to analyse  the Political Dimensions of the Crisis in the BRICS

OECD Headquarters in Paris will be the setting for this initiative, to be held on 26 May 2010. The roundtable will bring together Former Presidents and Prime Ministers, policy makers and scholars on the so-called BRICS Countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). This activity is part of the work being carried out by the Club of Madrid on the Political Dimensions of the World Economic Crisis, which has included four regional Roundtables on the European, Latin American, the Arab World and African perspectives.

The Club of Madrid, at the UN Alliance of Civilizations' III Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro

The organization, following the engagement with the Alliance, has organized a thematic session on Employment and Poverty Reduction in Times of Crisis. Leadership Action for Shared Societies: Bridging Cultures, Parity of Esteem and Economic Well-being as part of the Alliance's Third Forum in Rio de Janeiro. The sesson will feature Members John Kufuor (Ghana), Kjell Magne Bondevik (Norway), and the Ombudswoman of Peru Dr. Merino amongst others.

Prime Minister Bellerive of Haiti discusses with Club de Madrid leadership support for the "refoundation" of the State

In a meeting with Haitian Prime Minister Bellerive a Club of Madrid delegation led by Members Patterson and Jospin made available to the Haitian authorities the leadership experience of its members to support the refoundation of the State after the earthquake of January 12
