The Economics of Shared Societies at the 4th Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations

The meeting of the Fourth Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, which mission is to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions, took place in Doha (Qatar) on 11-14 of December. The Alliance is a network for joint action and in the focus of this forum there was a sense that intercultural dialogue and positive inter-cultural relations can contribute to development and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.

Club de Madrid calls for a Global Leadership on Climate Action at COP17

The Club de Madrid organized an official UNFCCC side event during the last UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa on 7 December 2011.

Three Members of the Club de Madrid, Cassam Uteem (President of Mauritius, 1992-2002), Mary Robinson, (President of Ireland, 1990-1997), and Luisa Diogo (Prime Minister of Mozambique, 2004-2010), made a strong call to achieve ambitious results in Durban.

Challenges ahead on assuring women's participation in peace and security

Representatives of several specialized NGOs, the United Nations, the European Union, the OSCE and governments met on the 1st of December at the NATO headquarters in Brussels in order to discuss lessons learnt on implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security. Successful stories were shared during the workshop, however barriers still remain in assuring the protection of women and girls; the prevention of gender-based violence; as well as in assuring women’s participation in peace processes.

Organized at different roundtables, the following issues were discussed during the workshop in addressing lessons learnt and suggesting further steps on implementing the UNSCR 1325.

The Club of Madrid Members and staff are deeply saddened by the passing of Guillermo O’Donnell, prominent Argentine political scientist and Helen Kellogg Professor of Government and International Studies at the University of Notre Dame.  We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Prime Minister Bondevik promotes dialogue between main actors involved in city planning of Southern Kyrgyzstan

Member Kjell Magne Bondevik, former Primer Minister of Norway, led a Club de Madrid mission to Osh city in Kyrgyzstan (November 20-24) to provide leadership to regional and local authorities, along to urban policy-makers, architects and city-planners, in Southern Kyrgyzstan.

The Club de Madrid delegation also included two international experts on urban development: Martin Angeby, Secretary General of the Swedish International Liberal Centre, and John David Hulchansky, Professor of Housing and Community Development at the University of Toronto, Canada.

OECD’s Report on Perspectives on Global Development 2012: Social Cohesion in a Shifting World

The Club de Madrid was invited to co-launch the OECD’s Report on Perspectives on Global Development 2012: Social Cohesion in a Shifting World on November 21st in Paris.

Member Wim Kok, President of the Club de Madrid, opened the event together with Pier Carlo Padoan, Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Economist of the OECD. Both acknowledged the mutual interest of this collaboration.

The Club de Madrid organized together with the Friederich Ebert Stiftung on 10 November 2011 a debate on the issues at stake of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development on the UN Headquarters in NY.

Four Members of the Club de Madrid, Wim Kok (Prime Minister of The Netherlands, 1994-2002), Jennifer Mary Shipley (Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1997-1999), Ricardo Lagos (President of Chile , 2000-2006), and Luisa Diogo (Prime Minister of Mozambique, 2004-2010), offered their point of view of the key issues under the UNCSD negotiation process.


Club de Madrid presents Bill Clinton with its Democratic Leadership Award

Last November 9th, at the Club de Madrid Gala Dinner sponsored by Telefónica, President Bill Clinton was given the organization’s Democratic Leadership Award. The gala celebrated the Club de Madrid’s tenth anniversary, and took place in New York City. The award recognizes a leader’s commitment to the consolidation of democratic values, human rights and good governance, and the promotion of sustainable, socio-economic development through democratic means, all of which represent the core values of the Club de Madrid.

The Club de Madrid Welcomes its New Members

The IX General Assembly of the Club de Madrid, held last 8th November in New York City, took important decisions regarding its membership and Senior Officers, always upon consideration of geographical, political and gender balances, as well as proven commitment to the organization and its activities.
In this regard the following seven former democratic heads of State or Government were welcomed as new full Members of the organization under the conviction that they will act as champions of democratic values worldwide: John Bruton ( Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland, 1994-1997), Luisa Diogo (Prime Minister of Mozambique, 2004-2010), Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie (President of Indonesia, 1998-1999), Horst Köhler (President of Germany, 2004-2010), Aleksander Kwasniewski (President of Poland, 1995-2005), Thabo Mbeki (President of South Africa, 1999-2008) and Martin Torrijos (President of Panama, 2004-2009).
