Zlatko Lagumdžija is Bosnia's new foreign minister

Zlatko Lagumdžija, Prime Minister of Bosnia & Herzegovina (July 2001-March 2002) and member of the Club de Madrid, is the new Bosnia's Vicepresident and Minister of Foreign Affairs. We would like to congratulate him. For the Club de Madrid, it is a true honour to count among our members such a distinguished personality and leader.

Digital Technologies for 21st Century Democracy & Gala Dinner 2011

The Club de Madrid turned ten in 2011. A very special occasion that was properly celebrated in New York on November that same year with two flagship events: the conference "Digital Technologies for 21st Century Democracy" and the X Anniversary Gala Dinner. Women Building Peace in Somaliland

G40 women leaders group from the Greater Horn of Africa High Level Mission in Hargeisa, Somaliland.  Kjell Magne Bondevik, the former Prime Minister of Norway and a member of the Club de Madrid, presided today over a round table discussion in Hargeisa (Somalia) to hear the recommendations for peace and security in Somaliland from the G40, a group of women leaders in the Greater Horn of Africa. 


A Foreign Policy at the Service of Spain

All of the democratic Spanish Foreign Ministers – including Carlos Westendorp, Secretary General of the Club de Madrid - signed a joint letter published in the February 5 th edition of El Mundo Daily titled “A Foreign Policy to Serve Spain”. In the letter, the eleven Ministers expressed their belief that Spain "can and should get out of debt, overcome the economic crisis with success and maintain its prominent position in world politics".


The Mexican Presidency of the G20 and its Priorities

As part of our G20 Initiative, on February 7, we organized in conjunction with the Embassy of Mexico in Spain the roundtable "The G20 Presidency of Mexico and its priorities". Dr. Michael Messmacher Linartas, Head of the Economic Planning Unit of the Treasury of Mexico and responsible for the issue of international financial reform within the G20 presidency of Mexico, was the keynote speaker. The Club de Madrid asked him some questions about the Mexican priorities for the G20 and other issues such as the Tobin Tax, Employment and Food security. Don´t miss it!

Strengthening the rule of law in counter-terrorism

The Club de Madrid is pleased to announce the publication of a significant report and book (AM Salinas de Friás, KLH Samuel, and ND White (eds), Counter-Terrorism: International Law and Practice (Oxford University Press, Oxford 2012) which examine how the rule of law may be strengthened in the context of counter-terrorist responses.

Haitian President launches key unblocking measures with the support of the Club de Madrid

President Michel Martelly, in the framework of a plenary session on “Political consensus amongst Haitians. The political experience of the Club de Madrid at the service of Haiti’s future » committed before the main Haitian stakeholders to publish a pending Constitutional Reform, to name all members of the Supreme Court (Cour de Cassation), to provide for a functional Permanent Electoral Council and municipal and senatorial elections in 2012 hence unblocking the standstill between the Executive and Legislative powers that was hindering development.

Vaclav Havel, a source of inspiration

The Club of Madrid Members and staff are deeply saddened by the passing of Vaclav Havel, tenth and last president of Czecho-Slovakia, first President of the Czech Republic (1993–2003), and Member of the Club de Madrid. We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
