Madrid, 28 March 2012 – The Club de Madrid, through its Board of Directors gathered on March 26, expressed its concern regarding the continued political unrest in the Maldives. 

Mexican G20 Sherpa, Amb. Lourdes Aranda, meets with the Club de Madrid

As part of our G20 Initiative, on March 27th, we organized in conjunction with the Embassy of Mexico in Spain a meeting with the Mexican G20 Sherpa, Ambassador Lourdes Aranda, also Mexican Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. The main objective of this meeting was to coordinate the collaboration of our organization with the Mexican Presidency of the G20 in the framework of the Club de Madrid's G20 Initiative. The Club de Madrid asked her some questions about the Mexican vision for the G20. The Club de Madrid held its XXX meeting of the Board of Directors this past Monday, March 27th and took this opportunity to share information on the current status of the organization’s finances, fundraising prospects, programs and its upcoming statutory meetings. 

Launch of the Asia-Pacific Forum

Today, March 26th,  French Polynesian President, Oscar Temaru, The Rt. Hon. Dame Jenny Shipley, Prime Minister of New Zealand (1997 – 1999) and Vice-President of the Club de Madrid and the world’s largest forum of democratic former Heads of State and Government, announce the upcoming ‘Asia-Pacific Forum’, to be held in Papeete, Tahiti on July 4-7, 2012, during a press conference in Brisbane.  The Forum, organized by the Presidency of French Polynesia and the Club de Madrid, will bring together numerous Members of the Club de Madrid, sitting leaders, policy makers and scholars from the Asia-Pacific region.

Time to end the war on drugs?

Yesterday took place in London a very interesting debate on whether or not to end the war on drugs. The event was organized by Intelligence Squared, broadcasted live on YouTube and open to everybody thanks to Google+. Our members Vicente Fox and Fernando Henrique Cardoso stood for the end of the war on drugs.


Club de Madrid at the OECD Urban Roundtable, Mobilizing Investments for Urban Sustainability, Job Creation and Resilient Growth

Chicago, 8 March 2012. Sustainable development, like climate change, is a global, national and local issue. Action and cooperation among stakeholders at all levels – international, national and local government, private companies and citizens – is needed to forge a more sustainable and equitable path. In the wake of the global financial crisis, it is even more important that these actors work together to finance and implement a shift to sustainable urban growth.

Haiti -  political stability is a must and a prerequisite for investment

From Feb. 26-29, a Club de Madrid delegation led by Pres. José María Figueres of Costa Rica and Club de Madrid’s Vice-President and former President of Bolivia Jorge Fernando Quiroga, was in Port-au-Prince to discuss with public officials, entrepreneurs and members of the international community, the potential for investment in eco-tourism and mining in Haiti.

Welcome to Perú!

The Club de Madrid has undertaken a survey mission to Peru in January (23-27) to identify a potential Shared Societies country implementation project. The Shared Societies programme officer, Carla Fernández-Durán, and Dr Werner Puschra, Executive Director of the New York Office of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, have been exploring the possibility of taking the Shared Societies Project to Latin America, particularly to Peru.
