Fourth Global Baku Forum

On 10–11 March 2016, inter­na­tional lead­ing fig­ures in global pol­i­tics are con­vened by the Nizami Gan­javi Inter­na­tional Cen­ter in an event in Baku to debate the cur­rent trends in inter­na­tional rela­tions and human secu­rity. The meet­ing pro­vides a space for cur­rent and for­mer Pres­i­dents, Prime Min­is­ters, Min­is­ters and lead­ing schol­ars and experts to assess the cur­rent state of the world and the most press­ing threats to inter­na­tional secu­rity and peace, and to elab­o­rate con­crete steps for today’s lead­er­ship to over­come these divi­sions

Club de Madrid Member Lagumdžija to take part in a young leadership program in Amman

Former Prime Minister of Bosnia Herzegovina, Zlatko Lagumdzija, will take part in a panel of the initiative “Debate to Action: Communication and Leadership Regional Training”, organized by the Anna Lindh Foundation and Common Purpose. The training will bring together 24-28 young emerging leaders from across eight Arab countries (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Libya)

Club de Madrid Member, James R. Mancham, new Africa Peace Award recipient

Sir James R. Mancham, founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, has announced his acceptance of the Africa Peace Award, which the United Religions Initiative (URI) has decided to honour him with. The URI is an interfaith peace organisation with consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and it is working to promote enduring daily interfaith cooperation to end religiously motivated violence and to create cultures of peace, healing and justice for the Earth and all living beings.

Club de Madrid tackles the role of the military in Myanmar's democratic transition

Ricardo Lagos, ex President of Chile and Club de Madrid Member, led the Fifth High-Level Mission to Myanmar from 19 to 22 January 2016 jointly organized with International IDEA. This visit sought to advance a peaceful military transfer of power to the newl elected leaders, foster national reconciliation and identify next steps in the peace process and  was part of the “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project, funded by The Charitable Foundation.  

Ricardo Lagos launches in Myanmar a book on democratic transitions

Former President of Chile and Club de Madrid Member, Ricardo Lagos officially launched the book Democratic Transitions: Learning from World Leaders in Yangon. This Myanmar edition of International IDEA’s book Democratic Transitions: Conversations with World Leaders has been published by the European Union, the Club de Madrid and International IDEA.

'A new vision for growth should be framed within broad parameters of human development, sustainability, and equality, which are non-negotiable' Laura Chinchilla has said at the first Shared Societies Project working group devoted to study the link between enviromental sustainability and inclusiveness This meeting started today at the GreenTree Foundation (New York) and will close tomorrow with the intervention, among others, of Zlakko Lagumdzja, former Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

Three world leaders will lead the first meeting on Enviromental Sustainability and Shared Societies

The Club de Madrid, through its Shared Societies Project, has established a working group to examine the link between Shared Societies and environmental sustainability. Members Laura Chinchilla, ex President of Costa Rica; Zlatko Lagumdzijaex Prime Minister of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Mary Robinson, ex President of Ireland, will lead the discussion on wheter a shared society is more likely to promote sustainability and the assumption that a sustainable society is more likely to facilitate social inclusion.

Building Shared Societies in Georgia

Club de Madrid Member Rexhep Meidani, President of the Republic of Albania (1997-2002), led the High-Level Mission to Georgia within the Shared Societies Project from 17 to 19 December 2015. This mission jointly organized by the Caucasus Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development (CIPDD) came to Georgia after the Parliament adopted in 2014 an anti-discrimination law on “Elimination of All form of Discrimination” establishing mechanisms against discrimination.

Club de Madrid Member Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, former President of Sri Lanka led the Fourth High-Level Mission to Myanmar within the “High Level Support for Effective Dialogue in Myanmar: Towards Democratic Transition and Shared Societies” Project, funded by The Charitable Foundation.  

Today is the International Human Rights Day!

Forty seven years ago the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with 48 states in favor and eight abstentions. After the horrors of two World Wars, it was a loud and clear call recognizing that no matter where we live, what we believe which race we belong to or whom we love, we all have non-negotiable set of rights that are at the very essence of our dignity and our condition.

Laura Chinchilla's op-ed: 'Countdown in Venezuela'
Three latinamerican newspapers, La Nación (Costa Rica), El Universal (Mexico) and O Globo (Brasil) have published today an op-ed from the former President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla on the occasion of the legislative elections that are being undertaken today in Venezuela. The Club de Madrid Member analyses the worrisome situation of the country from an economic, social and democratic point of view and expresses her hope that the venezuelan people will go to the poll stations in huge numbers to decide the future of Venezuela.
