The Second Global Shared Societies Forum in Azerbaiyan advocates for social inclusion

April 28, 2014

The gathering is also generating proposals to enhance a new set of development goals. Leaders such as Vaira Vike-Freiberga (Club de Madrid President and NGIC Co-Chair); Jorge Quiroga Club de Madrid vice-president); Abdul Kareem Al-Eryani (former Prime Minister of Yemen and Club de Madrid Member) and Tarja Halonen (former President of Finland, Club de Madrid and NGIC Member) among others are leading the discussions

The II Global Shared Societies Forum is the second joint collaboration of the Club de Madrid and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC). The Forum will address the relevance of the Shared Societies concept to development in general, including its economic, sustainability, governance and institutional contributions.  A basic proposition of the Shared Societies Approach is that all these aspects are interdependent so that progress on one can lead to progress on the others, thus creating a virtuous cycle of development.

The importance of the Forum is linked to the aim of Club de Madrid and Nizami Ganjavi International Center to connect the results of the consultation process completed in Azerbaijan and other countries in the Region towards the Post-2015 Development Agenda with previous Club de Madrid experiences in development and social inclusion projects all around the world in a way to foster the creation of Shared Societies in the South Caucasus region and influence the content of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals. The need of disaggregated data, the creation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and how to fund this new package of social actions will be the focus of the three days of discussions.

This is a timely moment for the Club de Madrid and the NGIC to undertake this initiative that will help define and shape a strategy to advocate for social cohesion and social inclusion at all levels in the midterm, but specially at United Nations level, considering the United Nations General Assemblywill make a declaration on the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals in September of this year. Within this framework these are the expected outcomes:

  • An outcome document which develops and refines the Shared Societies Perspective, particularly in relation to the Post-2015 Development Agenda
  • Increased support for the Shared Societies Position Paper, and other materials, that the Club de Madrid is promoting at the UN and elsewhere in the context of the Post-2015 process
  • Increased awareness of and support for the Shared Societies Approach in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, and more generally across the world
  •  New champions of Shared Societies
