The Club of Madrid to support the most vulnerable countries

September 19, 2010

September 19, 2010, New York, USA - During the high-level United Nations General Assembly, Mary Robinson met with senior representatives of the Government of Maldives and the Forum on Climate Vulnerable Countries. The Forum is composed of a group of leaders from countries that are most vulnerable to climate change, among which are Bangladesh, Barbados, Bhutan, Ghana, Kenya, Kiribati, Maldives, Nepal, Rwanda, Tanzania and Vietnam. Forum members advocate the fight against climate change, which for them has become an existential challenge.

During the meeting, convened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, the specific needs and positions of the group were discussed as well as the possibilities of better protection efforts and support in international forums, favoring relevant positions, and achieving a series of international commitments to these countries. Other participants in the event, which included 50 members from the Forum on Climate Vulnerable Countries, and UN representatives, were the President of Kiribati (incoming Chair of the Forum) and the Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Dr. Mohamed Quayes.

The meeting served to identify and discuss the establishment of future cooperation activities with Forum members with the aim to support their claims in international events in 2011.
