Achieving peaceful and inclusive societies in the Post 2015 Development Agenda

July 21, 2014

Between July 16th and 18th, Club de Madrid (CdM) Member and former Prime Minister of Canada, Kim Campbell, held a round of meetings with United Nations (UN) Permanent Representatives and UN agencies and programmes to present our work on Shared Societies, and support the goals on "achieving peaceful and inclusive societies, rule of law, effective and capable institutions" and "strengthening and enhancing the means of implementation and global partnership for sustainable development" advocating for these to remain in the outcome document of the Open Working Group (OWG).

The Shared Societies Project has been a Club de Madrid flagship project during the past seven years working globally with various governments, institutions and their leaders, advising them on the best approaches to building an inclusive and shared society. Over the past months, we have been having discussions with UN bodies and the Open Working Group of the UN General Assembly on Sustainable Development Goals. Here you will find the Club de Madrid¹s Position Paper on the Post 2015 Development Agenda as the basis for this endeavor. You can find as well the main themes and conclusions of the II Global Shared Societies Forum  where the CdM convened a group of experts and Club de Madrid Members to look at the concept of Shared Societies within the new Sustainable Development Goals and Post 2015 Development.

We therefore, at the CdM, are very pleased to see Goal 16 of the outcome document of the OWG including "peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels". This very much reflects the lessons we have learnt during the work on the Shared Societies Project.

We also would like to congratulate the co-chairs of the OWG, Mr. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations and Mr. Csaba Kőrösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations, on the great job they have done in the past months.
