In response to a growing demand for reinvigorated action on countering the lingering effects of the global crises, members of the Club de Madrid have provided critical insights on politically sustainable solutions to current global social and economic challenges.

ILO Director-General Juan Somavia invited the Club de Madrid to join in this urgent commitment to a new era of social justice and economic growth based on sustainable development to address mounting “turmoil” in the world of work.

“The experience and wisdom of the members of the Club de Club of Madrid brought an invaluable contribution to this International Labour Conference, and the ILO as we move towards a new era of social justice”, said Mr Somavia.

The Members of the Club de Madrid discussed these issues during a special event entitled “Lessons from the recent crisis for building sustainable and shared societies: Implications for the ILO” held on 14 June, and a high-level panel discussion held on today, 15 June.

“We need to give social issues the same importance as economic issues to ensure social justice and decent jobs” said Wim Kok, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and President of the Club de Madrid.

The special forum included the following Members of the Club de Madrid:  Mr. Osvaldo Hurtado, President of Ecuador (1981-1984), Mr John Kufuor, President of Ghana (2001-2009), Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, President of Nigeria (1976-1979, 1999-2007), Mr. Abdul Karim Al Eryani, Prime Minister of Yemen (1980-1983, 1998-2001) and Mr. Wim Kok, Prime Minister of the Netherlands (1994-2002) and President of the Club de Madrid.
