Ban Kii Moon, UN Secretary General

Radicalization and violent extremism are one of the greatest threats currently undermining human rights and democratic values. The cycle of violence triggered by extremism could be more damaging and destabilizing to global peace than any conflict since the end of the Cold War and is fuelling crises such as the massive internal displacement, and refugee exodus from the Middle East to the European countries.

In this context, we are proud to share with you our 2015 Policy Dialogue “MADRID +10: The Policy Dialogue on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism". Due to the continuous rise of violents acts by extremists, our Policy Dialogue appears as relevant and critical as ever.

Combining the gravitas and convening power of the World Leadership Alliance- Club de Madrid (www.clubmadrid.org), and the expertise of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King’s College London (www.icsr.info), the main objective of the conference is to mobilize policy makers, opinion formers, academic scholars, civil society and grassroots organizations around the concept of preventing and countering radicalization and violent extremism, increase public engagement and promote grassroots initiatives. The main partners of the conference are the European Commission, the International Dialogue Centre (KAICIID), the United States Department of State and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The conference will take place from October 27 to 28, 2015. It will convene two days of Plenary and Workshop Sessions. The plenary sessions will be live stream from www.clubmadrid.org.

To define a new way forward, we are bringing together Club de Madrid Members with policy makers, global leaders, academics and most importantly, the ones closer to violent extremism: people from grass roots initiatives worldwide. Among the participants we have prominent names in preventing and countering violent extremism from different sectors like:

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, will be the keynote speaker of the closing session of the Madrid+10 Policy Dialogue on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism.

Sadig Al-Mahdi, Prime Minister of Sudan (1966-1967, 1986-1989) and Member of the Club de Madrid, to share his views about the transformation in the Middle East.

Sarah Sewall, Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, U.S. State Department, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo, DEVCO Director General, European Commission and Hanif Qadir, Founder of the Active Change Foundation and former extremist, discussing New Approaches towards Preventing Violent Extremism.
