What should Venezuela do to become a United Nations Human Rights Council Member?

Today, the undersigned, former heads of state and government, who are members of the Club de Madrid, called on the UN General Assembly to grant Venezuela a second term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council only if Venezuela frees individuals detained for political reasons and accepts an impartial mission of electoral observers to monitor the upcoming elections. Statements from Club de Madrid Members, González and Piñera, on Leopoldo López

Sebastián Piñera and Felipe González, former Presidents of Spain and Chile, have raised their voices to condemm the sentence issued by a venezuelan court against the opposiiton leader Leopoldo López, who will now spend 13 years and 9 months in jail. Both Presidents, as well as the Club de Madrid, have been very active dennouncing the worrisome situation in Venezuela with a clear slideback in democratic values and human rights. The need for transparent and fair elections with international observation from OEA, UNASUR and the EU has also been stressed by Presidents González, Piñera and the Club de Madrid

Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve. 

Piñera and Pastrana to share good practices on electoral campaigns and political communication in Haiti

Club de Madrid Members Andrés Pastrana and Sebastián Piñera will chair the workshop  “Electoral Manifestos and Political Communication" during the forecoming UE funded mission to Haiti (May 24-26). The agenda also includes meetings with key institutional, political and private sector representatives, including President Martelly and the President of the Provisional Electoral Committee
