Roza Otunbayeva Part of UN Panel on Global Poverty and Women in Peace Building

The President of Kyrgyz Republic (2010-2011) and Club de Madrid Member was involved in two panel discussions focused on alleviating global poverty and empowering women through Shared Society initiatives. Both were framed by the specific goals outlined in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

 
SDGs: No one left behind

Club de Madrid members Roza Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan,, Zlatko Lagumdzija, former Prime Minister of Bosnia & Herzegovina and Abdurrahim El-Keib, former Prime Minister of Libya, were keynote speakers at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Annual Ministerial Review of the Millennium Development Goals. The participation of the CdM members took place from 8 to 10 July, 2015 in New York within the framework of the Shared Societies Project.

“Crisis or Transformation?” NGD Regional Roundtable in Stockholm

Club de Madrid Members and other democracy experts participated last week in Next Generation Democracy’s Track II Regional Roundtable in Stockholm; with the European arena in the spotlight and with the late, current and, moreover, future trends of Democracy in the region as the main talking point. The event, that took part in the Swedish capital, was held on June 2-4 and had the presence of eight Club de Madrid Members.  

Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve. 

New Paradigms for Peacebuilding: Sustainable peace through shared societies and social services for children

UNICEF and Club de Madrid co-organised a high level symposium on “New Paradigms for Peacebuilding: Sustainable peace through shared societies and social services for children” in Brussels on Tuesday March 17. The event brought together policy makers, donors, influential leaders, academia, government and civil society to promote discussion on the impact of education and other social services on social division and violent conflict. Ten Club de Madrid leaders join the Global Education & Skills Forum

The President and the Vicepresidents of the Club de Madrid, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Jennifer Mary Shipley and Jorge Quiroga respectively, will lead a ten Members delegation to Dubai to join the education-focused GESF meeting that will be held in Dubai the 15th-16th of march.
