Club de Madrid Member, Jorge Sampaio, Laureate of the Nelson Mandela Prize 2015

The United Nations selection Committee of the 2015 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela announced the selection of Club de Madrid Member Jorge Fernando Branco Sampaio, former President of Portugal as one of the two inaugural laureates of the first ever United Nations Nelson Mandela Prize. Dr. Helena Ndume of Namibia, as well as Mr Sampaio, will be awarded with the Prize in the UN Headquarters in New York on July 24.

Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve.

Former World Leaders Gather in Kuwait to Discuss Advancing Democractic Values and Human Rights

KUWAIT, May 23, 2011 – At the conclusion of an intensive, two-day forum hosted by the Center for Dialogue among Civilizations and Defense of Liberty and titled “Renewing Dialogue for Peace and Advancing Freedom and Human Rights in Today’s World,” Sheik Fahad Al Salem Al Ali Al Sabah called for reform in the Middle East region before a group of former world leaders. He told the gathering of Members of the Club de Madrid, former prime ministers and presidents, Nobel Prize winners and human rights luminaries: “We cannot have democracy on paper; it must be democracy in action and on the ground.”

The Club of Madrid, at the UN Alliance of Civilizations' III Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro

The organization, following the engagement with the Alliance, has organized a thematic session on Employment and Poverty Reduction in Times of Crisis. Leadership Action for Shared Societies: Bridging Cultures, Parity of Esteem and Economic Well-being as part of the Alliance's Third Forum in Rio de Janeiro. The sesson will feature Members John Kufuor (Ghana), Kjell Magne Bondevik (Norway), and the Ombudswoman of Peru Dr. Merino amongst others.
