Professional Experience:

Sánchez de Lozada was Founder and General Manager (1953-1957) of Telecine Ltda. production company and Founder and General Manager (1957-1962) of Andean Geo-Services Ltda. He was also Founder and President (1962-1993) of the Southern Mining Company INC. (COMSUR).


Political Career:

Sánchez de Lozada entered into public life in 1979 when he was elected member of the Chamber of Deputies for Cochabamba; he was then re-elected for the 1980 to 1985 term. From 1985 to 1986 he served as a Senator for Cochabamba and as President of the Senate. As President of the Senate and Minister of Planning, Sanchez de Lozada gained recognition as co-author of the 1985 economic "shock therapy" program, which brought Bolivia's 25,000% per year hyper-inflation under control and created the foundation for future economic stability and growth.

From 1986 to 1988, Sánchez de Lozada served as Minister of Planning and Coordination and from 1989 to 1993 he was head of the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) party.

In 1993, Sánchez de Lozada was elected as President of Bolivia, serving until 1997. During his Administration, he implemented the "Plan de Todos" (A Plan for Everyone), that was based on profound economic, social and political reforms. The program included initiatives for popular participation, decentralization, education reform, capitalization, and pension reform.

Following his term in office, Sánchez de Lozada was re-elected National Head of the MNR at the National Extraordinary Convention in 1999. In 2002, a successful campaign won him a second Presidential term. He served until 2003.

Sánchez de Lozada is a long-time member of the International Advisory Council of the Americas Society in New York; a member of the Leadership Council for Inter-American Summitry of the North-South Center of the University of Miami; Chairman of the Steering Committee in charge of organizing the Foundation of the Americas, sponsored by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Inter-American Dialogue; a sitting member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of the Americas in La Jolla, California; a member of the Council of Freely Elected Heads of Government of the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia; member of the Business Council of Latin America (CEAL); and member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie Economic Reform Network (CERN) of the Carnegie Endowment for World Peace, of Washington, D.C.



Sánchez de Lozada is the recipient of many national and international recognitions, awards, and Doctorates Honoris Causa.
