CdM Members, EU and UN leaders put the need for inclusive development at the center of PVE strategies

UN Secretary General discusses global democracy challenges with Club de Madrid

A 12 Member Club de Madrid delegation led by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, met with United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, founding Member of the Club de Madrid, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

The Shared Societies Project celebrated its tenth anniversary with a commemoration dinner attended by 35 invitees. Amongst them, 10 Club de Madrid Members, all of them former Presidents and Prime Ministers from America, Europe and Oceania and the economist Jeffrey Sachs, director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Kok and Turk, elected new Institute for Economics and Peace Advisory Council members

Club de Madrid supports the #InspiringTunisia campaign for a democracy that delivers

Thirteen Club de Madrid Members, all of them democractically elected former Presidents and Prime Ministers from all over the world, have signed the manifesto "Inspiring Tunisia; Translating Words Into Actions" to endorse a positive narrative about the country, and help the Tunisia2020 conference succeed.

 Members Türk and Jomaa lead a CdM panel at the World Bank Fragility, Conflict & Violence Forum

Club de Madrid Members Danilo Türk, President of Slovenia (2007-2012) and Mehdi Jomaa, Prime Minister of Tunisia (2014-2015), led the CdM High-level mission on 1-3 March to participate in the World Bank Fragility, Conflict and Violence Forum for 2016. The event, themed Take Action for Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, gathered over 100 World Bank partners and 600 participants to address collectively the World Bank’s challenging goals to end extreme poverty by 2030 and promote shared prosperity in a sustainable manner.

“Crisis or Transformation?” NGD Regional Roundtable in Stockholm

Club de Madrid Members and other democracy experts participated last week in Next Generation Democracy’s Track II Regional Roundtable in Stockholm; with the European arena in the spotlight and with the late, current and, moreover, future trends of Democracy in the region as the main talking point. The event, that took part in the Swedish capital, was held on June 2-4 and had the presence of eight Club de Madrid Members.  

#SharedSocieties at the UN Commision for Social Development

During the meetings of the UN Commision for Social Development, the Club de Madrid and the Division for Social Policy and Development of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized a Side Event with the theme: "The role of a Shared Society in achieving socially sustainable and inclusive development". Danilo Turk, President of Slovenia (2007-2012) and Member of the Club de Madrid, were one of the main panellists. 

Launch of the Journal Development and Dialogue on Shared Societies and the Post-2015 Development Agenda

A dialogue on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and Shared Societies -jointly organized by the Spanish State Secretariat of International Cooperation and the Club de Madrid, and hosted by Casa América- featured Club de Madrid Member, President Danilo Türk, and Enrique Iglesias, former Secretary-General of Ibero-American Cooperation Secretariat and honorary Member of the Club de Madrid.
