Haitian President launches key unblocking measures with the support of the Club de Madrid

President Michel Martelly, in the framework of a plenary session on “Political consensus amongst Haitians. The political experience of the Club de Madrid at the service of Haiti’s future » committed before the main Haitian stakeholders to publish a pending Constitutional Reform, to name all members of the Supreme Court (Cour de Cassation), to provide for a functional Permanent Electoral Council and municipal and senatorial elections in 2012 hence unblocking the standstill between the Executive and Legislative powers that was hindering development.

Challenges ahead on assuring women's participation in peace and security

Representatives of several specialized NGOs, the United Nations, the European Union, the OSCE and governments met on the 1st of December at the NATO headquarters in Brussels in order to discuss lessons learnt on implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security. Successful stories were shared during the workshop, however barriers still remain in assuring the protection of women and girls; the prevention of gender-based violence; as well as in assuring women’s participation in peace processes.

Organized at different roundtables, the following issues were discussed during the workshop in addressing lessons learnt and suggesting further steps on implementing the UNSCR 1325.

Ahmed Néjib Chebbi (tunisian candidate) visits the Club de Madrid

The Secretary General of the Club de Madrid, Carlos Westendorp, met on Tuesday September 27th with Ahmed Néjib Chebbi, Secretary General of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) of Tunisia, during his visit to Madrid. They exchanged views on Tunisia’s transition period and explored opportunities for collaboration.

Madrid, 12 September 2011. - The Club of Madrid, in conjuncture with the Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation, and with the collaboration of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), organised last week, Monday 12 September, a round table discussion centred upon the theme of “An opportunity for the Leadership of the Countries in the Process of Development: The High Level Forum of Busan”.

The Club de Madrid presents its Recommendations to the G20

Paris, 9 September 2011 – In view of the grave and anxious economic and political situation the world is presently experiencing, the next G20 summit will pay particular attention to the search for and application of solutions to these issues. At this summit, 19 countries will arrange to meet, as well as the European Union, as an economic bloc, which represents 85% of the world’s economy and two thirds of the world’s population.  

The Club of Madrid is joining forces in this effort through its G20 initiative. With the support of the French Presidency of the G20 and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Club of Madrid organised during the 8 – 9 September a high level meeting in Paris, with the objective of evaluating and debating the most pressing and urgent affairs currently gripping the world today, ones which are considered vital for the G20 to address.

Peaceful and Shared Societies: The Challenge of Current Leaders

BRUSSELS, May 26, 2011 – Club de Madrid Secretary General Carlos Westendorp stressed in the presentation of the 2011 Global Peace Index (GPI) that “societies are most likely to be peaceful, democratic and prosperous when leaders and citizens recognize the value of diversity and actively build a shared society”.

Club de Madrid supports the normal transference of power in Haiti

Just after the announcement of the final reults that declared Michael Martelly as the elected Predident for Haiti, a delegation of the Club de Madrid travelled to the country to express the organisation’s support to the normal continuity of the democratic process. The delegation, leaded by Presidents Lacalle (Uruguay) and Quiroga (Bolivia), along Club de Madrid’s General Secretary Carlos Westendorp, discussed with the new leaders of the country and the highest authorities in duty the constitutional reform and the regulation of international aid as the most inmediate challenges that the new powers will have to face.


What Americans, Nigerians, and Iraqis Have in Common?

The economic argument for socially inclusive shared societies.

On April 14, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Gallup and the Club de Madrid hosted an event at The Gallup Building in Washington, D.C. to discuss insights into the relationship between socially inclusive societies and economic wellbeing. The event focused on how leaders and policymakers can leverage the full spectrum of their countries' population to shape future economic prosperity by creating "shared societies." The Club de Madrid moves forward along with the International sustainable development agenda

The Club de Madrid welcomes the progress achieved during the last round of international climate negotiations that took place in Bangkok, Thailand, 3-8 April, where an agreement on the agenda for the negotiations towards COP17 in Durban, South Africa, at the end of 2011, was reached. The next Climate Talks will take place in Bonn, Germany, on 6-17 June 2011, and the Club de Madrid, plans to organise a side event where the messages for an equitable and fair post-2012 climate regime are strengthened, including the support to the most vulnerable countries and the advocacy for the missing Millennium Development Goal “universal clean energy access”.

A Shared Societies Approach to Economic and Social Policy

Changes in the Arab World: Revolutions towards Democracy?

The Club de Madrid and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs co-organized a debate on “Changes in the Arab World: Revolutions towards Democracy?” held in the Diplomatic School of Madrid on April 5, with keynote speeches by Wim Kok (Prime Minister of the Netherlands, 1994-2002 and President of the Club de Madrid), Lionel Jospin (Prime Minister of France, 1997-2002), Sadig Al Mahdi (Prime Minister of Sudan, 1966-1967 and 1986-1989) and Abdul-Kareem Al Eryani (Prime Minister of Yemen, 1980-1983 and 1998-2001) through a video message.

Political Leadership for Democratic Transition in Kyrgyzstan

From 28-31 March 2011, a Club de Madrid mission entitled “Consolidation of new political structures and Constitutional implementation”, led by two Club de Madrid Members – Kjell Magne Bondevik, Prime Minister of Norway (1997-2000, 2001-2005) and Petre Roman, Prime Minister of Romania (1989-1991), as well as Club de Madrid’s Secretary General, Carlos Westendorp launched the Club’s project “Political Leadership for Democratic Transition in Kyrgyzstan”. This was the first mission in the framework of a twelve-months project funded by the Delegation of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic.
