Last November 9th, at the Club de Madrid Gala Dinner sponsored by Telefónica, President Bill Clinton was given the organization’s Democratic Leadership Award. The gala celebrated the Club de Madrid’s tenth anniversary, and took place in New York City. The award recognizes a leader’s commitment to the consolidation of democratic values, human rights and good governance, and the promotion of sustainable, socio-economic development through democratic means, all of which represent the core values of the Club de Madrid.
The meeting, held in New York on December 13th & 14th, had also the participation of other renowned progressive figures like Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Denmark), Carme Chacón (Spain), Matthias Machning (Germany), Mona Salin (Sweden), Poul Nyrup Rasmussen (Denmark), Gordon Bajnai (Hungary) and Trevor Manuel (South Africa) among others.
President Clinton called or public-private partnerships and sustained commitment to Haiti’s future. Clinton addressed the Club de Madrid members adn experts participating in the special session on Reconstruction and Democratic Development: The Case of Haiti where Haitian State Minister Delatour was keynote speaker. The session followed the Club de Madrid's IX General Assembly.
