The Dar es Salaam Statement

A group of informed African leaders and citizens met on 19th and 20th November in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania under the auspices of the Club de Madrid and the UONGOZI Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development. It was co-chaired by Club de Madrid Members H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania, H.E. Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana and H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria.

The Women’s Leadership for Peace and Security in the Greater Horn of Africa project held a High level Mission to the Republic of South Sudan (10-14 October) as starting point of its second phase (2011-2012). This mission was organized by the project partners Club de Madrid, Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and Isis – WICCE, with the support and collaboration of the Governments of Australia and Belgium. It was attended by civil society leaders, practitioners, government officials, parliamentarians and experts to examine women’s participation in peace and security dialogue and decision-making.


Former World Leaders Gather in Kuwait to Discuss Advancing Democractic Values and Human Rights

KUWAIT, May 23, 2011 – At the conclusion of an intensive, two-day forum hosted by the Center for Dialogue among Civilizations and Defense of Liberty and titled “Renewing Dialogue for Peace and Advancing Freedom and Human Rights in Today’s World,” Sheik Fahad Al Salem Al Ali Al Sabah called for reform in the Middle East region before a group of former world leaders. He told the gathering of Members of the Club de Madrid, former prime ministers and presidents, Nobel Prize winners and human rights luminaries: “We cannot have democracy on paper; it must be democracy in action and on the ground.”
