Juan Manuel Santos and 10 former presidents lead the NGD Roundtable about the future of democracy in the Americas

Within Next Generation Democracy’s (NGD) project, the comprehensive debate on the current state and future of democracy will –within its dynamic world process- also take a specific look to the Americas Region. Members of the Club de Madrid from the region of the Americas along with experts and relevant regional actors will discuss around the question of democracy in a new regional Roundtable in Colombia next 24-26 August. Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve.

February 16, 2011, Madrid, Spain - El Club de Madrid, with the support of Fundación Carolina, organized in Madrid a breakfast meeting between four of its members, ulio Maria Sanguinetti, President of Uruguay (1985-1990, 1995-2000), Belisario Betancur, President of Colombia (1982-1986), Andrés Pastrana, President of Colombia (1998-2002 ) andErnesto Zedillo, President of Mexico (1994-2000), and business representatives to analyze the situation in Latin America from three key areas: political stability economic prosperity and legal security.
