Club de Madrid Member, António Manuel Mascarenhas Monteiro, has passed away, aged 72. He was  the first democratically elected President of Cape Verde in 1991 and was re-elected for a second time in 1996.He was one of the most respected figures in Africa and worldwide. Thirty Club de Madrid Members back the Varkey Foundation initiative to restore teacher respect

The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world in which they warned that an erosion in respect for the teaching profession could lead to “profoundly damaging” effects on young people’s life chances and a rise in extremism.The Club de Madrid Members, lead by its President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve.

OECD’s Report on Perspectives on Global Development 2012: Social Cohesion in a Shifting World

The Club de Madrid was invited to co-launch the OECD’s Report on Perspectives on Global Development 2012: Social Cohesion in a Shifting World on November 21st in Paris.

Member Wim Kok, President of the Club de Madrid, opened the event together with Pier Carlo Padoan, Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Economist of the OECD. Both acknowledged the mutual interest of this collaboration.
