General Assembly
About
The General Assembly is the highest representative and governing body of the Club de Madrid. It is composed of all the former Heads of State and Government of the Club de Madrid, representatives of each of the two Constituent Foundations as well as the Secretary General of the organization, all of whom shall attend with full voting rights. All other institutional and honorary members, as well as the Club de Madrid advisors, may participate in the General Assembly but are entitled to vote.
The General Assembly meets at least once a year and is responsible for the approval of the organization’s activities according to its objectives, reports prepared by the Secretariat, the incorporation of new members in the Club de Madrid, the designation or ratification of the President, Vice-Presidents, the members of the Board of Directors, the Secretary General, and the approval of the organization’s fundraising strategy, annual budget and accounts.
The Club de Madrid reached a special milestone in 2011: ten years of building democracy that delivers. Over the last decade, our Members have shared their expertise and knowledge with leaders around the globe, strengthening upcoming democratic governments and thus making a definite, long-term improvement in the lives of thousands.
We celebrated this 10th anniversary in November 2011 with two flagship events in New York City:
- Our Annual Conference, “Digital Technologies for 21st Century Democracy”, and
- A 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
During the two-day Conference, some of the world’s most experienced and inspirational leaders, policy-makers and scholars took an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges that big data and social networks or collective intelligence technologies present to the future of government and democracy, looking at the more specific impact of this Digital Revolution on the three pillars of political life: the State, citizens and the media. Wishing to keep this conversation going on beyond the Conference, members of the Club de Madrid committed to the effective implementation of “21st Century Democracy” and will pursue a wide range of activities accordingly in the coming months.
At the 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner, we presented our Democratic Leadership Award to Club de Madrid Honorary Co-Chair President Bill Clinton. Previously delivered to Peace Nobel Prize Winner and former South African President Nelson Mandela, this Award recognizes an individual’s firm commitment with the consolidation of democratic values, human rights, good governance, and the promotion of sustainable, socio-economic development through democratic means.
