John Kufuor

President of Ghana
(2001-2009)

John Kufuor was appointed in 1969 Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and led the Ghana’s delegation at UN General Assembly, the Organization of African Unity’s meetings in Addis Abeba and the Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Lusaka in 1970. In 1982, he accepted an invitation to become the Secretary for Local Government. In 1998, Mr. Kufuor became the Leader of the New Patriotic Party. He was elected President of Ghana in 2001 and re-elected in 2005. He was elected Chairperson of the African Union for the 2007-2008 session. He currently chairs Interpeace, an international peacebuilding organization headquartered in Geneva, helping societies manage conflict and build lasting peace.
