Cassam Uteem

President of the Republic of Mauritius
(1992-1997, 1997- 2002)

Cassam Uteem was elected to the Mauritian Parliament in 1976 and successively re-elected in 1982, 1983, 1987, and 1991. He served as Minister of Employment, Social Security and National Solidarity (1982-1983) and Lord Major of Port Louis (1986). He held the title of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Industrial Technology (1990-1991). Mr. Uteem is very active in the field of international public policy. He is currently Board Member of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Member of the Haut Conseil de la Francophonie, and Founder-Member of the Global Leadership Foundation (GLF).
