Benjamin Mkapa

President of Tanzania
(1995-2005)

Mr. Mkapa served in the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party government as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education. He won the country’s first democratic presidential elections in 1995 and was re-elected in 2000. His administration is best known for its liberal economic policies which encouraged privatization and foreign investment. He also succeeded in the cancellation of some of Tanzania’s foreign debt. His presidential mandate ended in 2005, but he remained politically active both at regional and international level. He is currently Chairman of the South Centre, Co-Chair of the Investment Climate Facility for Africa, and Co-Chair of the Africa Emerging Markets Forum. He is a member of the Africa Forum.
