In 1989, Petre Roman became the first prime minister of the post-communist government. In 1992, he became member of the Chamber of Deputies where he chaired the Defence Committee. He served as Senator and Chairman of the Defence Committee (1996-1999) and as Minister of State and Foreign Affairs (1999-2000). He also served as the chairman of the Democratic Party of Romania (1993-2001). He was re-elected Senator in November 2000.
