President of Chile
(1994-2000)

Eduardo Frei began his political career by joining the Christian Democratic Party in 1958. A student leader, he actively participated in the presidential campaign of his father, Eduardo Frei Montalva, which the latter won in 1964. After his father’s death in 1982, Eduardo Frei founded the Eduardo Frei Montalva Foundation which he chaired until April 1993. During the Pinochet years, he helped initiate the Pro free-Elections Committee and actively took part in the campaign against the plebiscite summoned by the Pinochet regime in 1988. In 1989 he was elected in the Senate. In 1992 he was elected President of his party and also won the primary presidential elections of his coalition. He was elected President in 1994 and served until 2000. Since the end of his mandate, he has been sitting in the Senate. In 2009 he ran for presidential elections again for the Concertación por la democracia but was defeated by Sebastian Piñera, the first right-wing President ever elected in Chile since the restoration of democracy.
