Rexhep Meidani

President of the Republic of Albania
(1997-2002)

In 1991, Mr. Meidani was Chair of the Central Election Commission and member of the Presidential Council. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Albanian Center for Human Rights (1994-1996) and was elected Secretary General of the Socialist Party (1996-1997). He was elected President of his country in 1997. During his presidential mandate, he played a crucial role in safeguarding the democratic institutions and facilitating the economic recovery of the country. He also played a key role in the adoption and implementation of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, a measure designed to foster peace, democracy, and economic development in the Balkans.
